Our Story
A Mexico City Bistro in the Heart of Houston
Cuchara, an authentic Mexico City inspired bistro, opened its doors on September 15, 2012 with an unforgettable Mexican Independence Day celebration. Set on the corner of Fairview and Taft, the 1940s brick building was once home to The Hyde Park Supermarket.
Conceived by Ana Beaven and Charlie McDaniel, Cuchara blends a modern, open aesthetic with vibrant bursts of color and texture. Rainbow hued plates and bowls, along with “mercado” style pots and pans pay homage to the spirit and flavors of Mexico City. Our kitchen is led by an all-female team of cooks who bring strength, care, and tradition to every dish they prepare.
The space features three captivating murals by Mexico City artist Cecilia Beaven. Her whimsical icons appear throughout the restaurant, adding movement and storytelling to every corner. The largest mural stretches across the dining room, depicting a chaotic maze of cars and roads, while in another scene, figures from a parallel world observe guests at the bar. A third mural evokes the energy of an open-air market, celebrating the fresh ingredients that inspire our menu and weekly specials.

Our Artist
Cecilia Beaven
Cecilia Beaven is a Mexico City-based artist whose work draws from the deep well of Mexican folk art, contemporary illustration, and a personal visual language that is at once playful and profound.
Her large-scale murals at Cuchara transform our dining room into a living gallery, bringing the walls alive with vibrant forms, folkloric energy, and the unmistakable spirit of Mexico City.
Beaven's work has become an essential part of Cuchara's identity, a visual extension of the bold flavors and warm hospitality that define our restaurant.

Welcome to our Mexican bakery and café, where tradition meets comfort. Enjoy freshly baked pan dulce, artisanal pastries, and specialty coffee in a space made for slow mornings and good conversation. Open daily from 7am to 3pm (closed Mondays).
